New Year's Eve is usually a big ol' excuse for making big changes in your life, but this year, you may actually want to follow through on that flimsy resolution—at least, when it comes to your hairstyle. In past pandemic-filled years, we've been drawn to the more subtle switch-ups, like a few highlights here or there, and a little trim of your ends. But according to hairstylist Xavier Velasquez, 2023 hair trends will have a maximalist approach. In other words, more is more, and bigger is definitely better. We're talkin' more volume, more length, bigger curls, bigger waves, and bigger color transformations—so get ready.
“We’re seeing a movement towards looking more groomed after being at-home for so long during COVID,” says celebrity hairstylist Garren. “People want to get back to styles that are easy for them to handle with styling and are classically gorgeous, since we are going back to the office and normal life." So what does that mean? "Think healthy, voluminous, classic looks, with modern twists and layers,” he says.
Basically, consider 2023 to be the year of the comeback with the voluminous curls of the '70s, the shaggy mullets of the '80s, the bouncy blowouts of the '90s, and the side parts of the '00s being bigger and better than ever. Now get scrolling for some serious hairstyle inspiration.

The Rachel Cut for 2023
CONTINUE READING BELOW ↓watch nowThe “Rachel” cut might be celebrating its 28th birthday this year (!!), but as beauty continually proves, everything old is eventually made new again. Hairstylist Garren says we’ll continue to see iterations of the beloved '90s haircut or the ‘satchel cut,’ which is a mix between that and a shag. “This works really great for thin/fine hair, because it make you look like you have more layers in your hair without making it look too thin,” he says.

Classic Shags for 2023
ADVERTISMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW ↓Hairstylist Kim Kimble agrees and says shags of all kinds—curly shag, long shag, shaggy mullets—are going to be big for 2023. “This style has been reinvented in so many different ways and I believe it will make a comeback with more variations heading into 2023.”
According to Garren, the shaggy hairstyle typically requires less styling, which means you can choose to air-dry your hair or blow-dry it and still get the same effect.

Choppy Cuts for 2023

High Updos for 2023
The '90s will continue to heavily influence 2023 hair trends, starting with updos like this one. “The updos will be more on top of the head similar to that of Brigitte Bardot and Pamela Anderson,” hairstylist Alex Brown explains and recommends BLAX Elastics hair ties for keeping your updo in place. “They’re super durable and won’t break when securing your bun or ponytail.”

Bedhead Hair for 2023
I love when a trend is easy to follow, and nothing is easier than rolling out of bed in the morning. Hairstylist Aaron Grenia says bedhead will be one of the biggest looks of 2023. “With the 90’s so on-trend right now, it seems that messier, almost grunge-era styles are a natural tangent from the tousled beachy waves that have been so popular in recent years.”

'90s Grunge Hair for 2023
Grenia says the grunge look can be achieved with any length or style, like the short hair shown here on Emma Chamberlain. All you need to remember is the more layers and choppy pieces you have in your hair, the more separation and piece-y texture you can achieve.

Copper Auburn for 2023
Hairstylist Rita Hazan shares three themes for hair color trends: warm tones, rich tones, and high-maintenance color. “It's about looking glamorous with natural tones,” Hazan explains and adds that copper auburn is one shade we'll be seeing a lot of in 2023. To maintain your color, Hazan says you gotta get a gloss: “It’s the only way to ensure your hair color stays vibrant and shiny.”

Volume for Short Hair in 2023
Xavier says volume will be at the forefront of all styles in 2023, even shorter lengths like this one. All of the experts I spoke with repeatedly used terms like "healthy," "thick," "voluminous," and "bouncy" to describe 2023 hair trends, but how exactly do you keep your hair healthy while also heat styling? Grenia says it's as easy as using a heat protectant. “They are so important when using hot tools and help reduce damage and breakage by sealing and protecting the hair," he says.

Face-Framing Layers in 2023
Instead of a one-length bob, Brown suggests throwing some layers in the mix. If you think your hair is too fine for layers, think again. “Ask your hairstylist to cut the perimeter of your haircut blunt, which will create a thicker look on the ends,” Brown explains. “I would recommend only adding face-framing layers while keeping the back one length to give the ends a thicker appearance.”

Yep, Velasquez predicts a return of the millennial favorite hair parting.
