Why is it important to use lip balms with SPF?
Not only are they just as exposed as the rest of our face, but the skin on our lips is actually thinner, making them more susceptible to the sun's damaging UV rays. Our lips also have less melanin (a substance that acts as a natural defense against the sun) than the rest of our body, which means they have less protection from the sun.
When you don't apply lip products with SPF, your lips get exposed to UV rays, which can lead to dryness or chapped lips, sunburn—or worse, lip cancer.
How often should I reapply lip balms with SPF?
Lip balms with SPF should be reapplied generously throughout the day—even more so than face sunscreens, as any product applied to our lips tends to fade faster. According to Mayo Clinic, you should retouch once every hour, especially before and after swimming and eating.
