Ok, let's get this out of the way: Body hair is completely normal, and the choice to remove yours is completely up to you—don't let society (or your S.O.) tell you otherwise! That said, if you're one of the girlies who believe that less is more when it comes to hair down there, then a Brazilian wax is the way to go. It's one of the most popular waxing services out there since everything—yup, everything—gets pulled out.
With Valentine's Day just around the corner, getting a Brazilian wax might be one of the things on your to-do list, especially if you plan on getting down and dirty with your beau. But it can be a year-round thing, too, ofc. Below, we'll give you a list of salons that offer the service, plus some v important (!) things you need to know before booking that appointment:
What is a Brazilian wax?
A Brazilian wax is a style of hair removal where all the hair from the labia and pubic bone (and the anus, if you choose) gets pulled out by a technician using a wax concoction. The finished result is a completely hair-free bikini area that lasts up to three to four weeks before it completely grows back. P.S. This period can be shorter or longer, depending on your hair growth cycle.
How do I prepare for a Brazilian wax?
First things first: If you're feeling shy about the technician seeing your vagina, just remember that it's their job. They see vaginas of all shapes, sizes, and colors daily, so it's just business for them as usual!
To prepare for your Brazilian wax, all you need to do is trim your bush to about half an inch before your appointment. Shaving in the days leading up to your session is not recommended, since this can cause your hairs to grow at different lengths, making it hard for the wax to grip onto them and get a clean pull.
If you're worried about the pain, you can pop a painkiller a few hours before your appointment to reduce sensitivity and inflammation post-waxing.
Is it painful getting a Brazilian wax?
Let's be real: Any procedure involving your hair getting pulled out from your skin repeatedly for 10 to 15 minutes is always going to hurt, especially if you have thicker hair growth or low pain tolerance. If it gets too overwhelming for you at any point during the session, you can always ask the technician for a little breather before they resume—they won't mind at all.
Also, some good news: If you regularly book appointments, the hair will grow back finer and more sparse, resulting in a less painful session than the last. Whew.
What happens during a Brazilian wax?
It can be nerve-wracking to be so exposed to your technician during the appointment, but knowing what actually goes on during the session can help ease your mind. Here's what usually goes down:
- Once you get to the room, the technician will ask you to take off your bottoms and cover yourself with a towel before lying down on the bed. They will leave the room first to give you privacy, ofc!
- Once you're settled, the technician will apply powder to your skin to prevent the wax from sticking to it.
- The technician will dip a wooden stick into a pot of wax and let it cool for a bit before spreading it on your skin in the direction of your hair growth. Then, they'll stick a piece of cloth to it and pull it off in one fluid motion. This step gets repeated until your vagina is completely hair-free.
- Since everything must go during a Brazilian wax sesh, the technician will also ask you to turn around and bend over a bit so they can also get the hair between your butt. Again, no need to feel shy as this is just another day at work for them.
- Once they're done with all the areas, they might also use tweezers to get any stragglers left behind that the wax didn't grip. They will also apply a soothing gel on your skin to help minimize redness and inflammation.
What do I do after a Brazilian wax session?
Once you're done with your sesh, refrain from showering with hot water, working out, and going to the beach or pool. And because we know you're curious, this also includes not having sex for at least 12 to 24 hours after your wax (so make sure to schedule your sesh correctly!). You also need to gently exfoliate the area regularly to slough off the dead skin and prevent ingrown hairs from appearing.
