I Got A Daith Ear Piercing For The First Time—Here's What Happened

Spoiler: It didn't ~magically~ make my migraines go away.

Here's something to know about me: I'm a *big* fan of ear piercings. I currently have seven piercings, mostly situated on my lobe and cartilage. But at the height of my ~frenzy~, I had as many as 10 (!!!) piercings.

One ear piercing I always wanted to have was the daith. ICYDK, it involves piercing the innermost cartilage of your ear using a hollow needle. Aside from being an eye-catching and unorthodox piercing, it also *apparently* reduces migraines. It mimics the acupuncture technique that switches on the pressure points that help relieve migraine symptoms—though there are no studies to back this up. Despite this, people with daith piercings have reported success in temporarily treating their headaches.

When I had the chance to get my daith pierced at a gig I recently attended, I immediately jumped at the opportunity, ofc! Read all about my experience here:

Daith Ear Piercing Experience

The Cost

The gig I attended had a pop-up piercing booth where you could get *any* ear piercing for only P999If you're getting it done at a regular piercing parlor, be prepared to shell out P1,000 to P1,500 for a daith ear piercing.

The Process + Pain Level

Before the actual procedure, the piercer cleaned my cartilage with alcohol and then marked the area she was going to pierce using a pen. After checking if I was good to go with the placement, she brought out the one-time-use hollow needle. Even though I generally have high pain tolerance, needles still scare me, so I was definitely nervous, LOL!

I had to hold my friend's hand during the actual piercing for ~*moral support*~, but the pain level was a surprising 2/10! Cheska Santiago

When it came to the pain level of the actual piercing, I would rate it a *surprising* two out of 10. The actual piercing process was very quick, even though it was trickier compared to regular lobe piercings since it involved puncturing the inside of my ear. (Big thanks to the ~light and quick~ hands of my piercer!) The pain is comparable to a red ant bite, and it was over before I knew it. After inserting the curved barbell in the hole, she used a piercing aftercare solution to disinfect and clean the site before deeming me good to go.

The End Result

I was very pleased with the result—sulit ang bayad, haha! My ear was red and felt "heavy" afterward, which is to be expected after a piercing. Compared to my helix piercing, I didn't have a hard time sleeping on my side since the daith piercing is located inside my ear which is a big plus for me. The only downside to this ~cool~ piercing is that I can't really insert my right earphone fully into my ear because the curved barbell (which is the recommended jewelry for daith piercings since it's longer, which in turn can give space for the swelling and healing) is in the way, though you can definitely work your way around this when you change your jewelry after it's fully healed. In the meantime, I'll be definitely checking out some cute headphones, LOL!

The finished piercing is definitely a 10/10, IMO. Cheska Santiago

As for my migraines? I still get them from time to time, so the "promise" of reduced headaches is definitely a myth. But hey, at least I have a cute new ear piercing to show for it!
