There’s something about legs that make them so prone to dryness. Maybe it’s because they don’t receive the same TLC as the face, or it could be because of good ol’ genes. Whatever the reason for their rough, scaly appearance, you’re not alone in this, so don’t feel bad. We know so many people (including ourselves!) who have dry legs.
As a matter of fact, we’ve tried countless body lotions, washes, soaps, and scrubs to moisturize our legs—only for the dry appearance to creep back in an hour after we shower. TBH, we thought our legs would be this way forever and were coming around to accepting them. Luckily, through constant trial and error, we found a combo that worked really well.
If, like us, you’ve struggled to find products that will hydrate your dry legs and keep them that way, keep scrolling for the only five-step leg skincare routine you’ll ever need.
The 5-Step Routine To Try If You Have Dry Legs
-
Regularly exfoliate with a dry brush
Dry brushing is a type of Ayurvedic practice meant to remove toxins by brushing the body in a particular pattern. While it hasn’t been exactly proven, many practitioners believe it helps break down cellulite and stimulates the lymphatic system. Aside from that, it’s great for removing dead skin cells on your arms, torso, and especially the legs—thanks to the dry brush’s natural fibers. You can do this before taking a shower or during, it just depends on the type of exfoliation you want for your skin. Tip: We prefer dry brushing our bodies before showering so our soaps and body washes can be better absorbed!

Once or twice a week, use a chemical exfoliant instead
When it comes to exfoliation, you don’t have to choose between physical and chemical. You can incorporate both into your routine, just not at the same time. On days when you think your legs could use a break from the dry brush, apply a bit of a chemical exfoliant to help slough off dead skin cells and unclog ingrown hairs. We believe less is more when it comes to AHAs and BHAs, so apply a bit on a cotton round or ball, and wipe it all over your legs, knees, and ankles. Then proceed with the rest of your body!

Lather your legs (and body) with shea butter soap
Body washes have been the go-to shower moisturizer for as long as we can remember but don’t overlook bar soaps yet, especially ones made out of shea butter. They’re incredibly moisturizing, last long if made well, and are better for the environment since they don’t come in a plastic bottle.
During your shower, lather up a bar of shea butter soap (We love L’Occitane’s Lavender-scented version since it’s super hydrating and smells so good) and rub it all over your body. Don’t forget to rinse it off. Trust us, your legs will instantly feel softer!

Apply body yogurt after
In our quest to find the right lotion for our legs, we were always looking for something lighter than a cream but more moisturizing than a gel. Enter: body yogurt. It feels like whipped cream, but it’s not. It’s a gel-cream formula that absorbs fast while deeply moisturizing the skin! It’s perfect for humid climates like the Philippines, so your legs won’t feel malagkit.

Protect with SPF
Everywhere you have skin needs SPF. If you rarely use sunscreen on your body (except when going to the beach), this might be one of the main reasons your legs are always dry. Regular sun exposure can ruin your skin barrier and cause dryness and irritation. If you’re lazy to wipe sunscreen all over your body every day, we recommend a sunscreen spray. Beach Hut’s lightweight version won’t leave you with a sticky cast and has an SPF of 100!
