Anyone who’s ever dealt with a bad breakout knows that treating acne is just half the battle. Pimples may come and go, but the scars they leave tend to linger for a lot longer and are often much more challenging to treat.

While some marks fade over time, with or without help from exfoliating toners or serums, there are dark spots and acne scars that demand more than a beauty product or a facial. And if you’ve tried just about everything to fade these marks and still don’t see results, you might want to try microneedling for acne scars next.

What exactly is microneedling?

Microneedling (also called collagen induction treatment) is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure wherein a dermatologist or a cosmetic surgeon uses very thin sterilized needles to prick the skin. This then stimulates the skin’s production of collagen in order to heal what it perceives as damage to the skin barrier.

ICYDK, collagen is a naturally occurring protein that makes up about 80 percent of our skin. As we age, however, the body produces less and less of it, causing the skin to dull, thin, and wrinkle. By triggering the body to produce more collagen, microneedling helps address many skincare concerns.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

Many people turn to microneedling to address a myriad of skin problems. The benefits include reducing the appearance of fine lines, addressing hyperpigmentation, boosting skin elasticity, and fading stretch marks, in addition to dealing with acne scars. And yes, it can be applied to other problematic parts of the skin aside from the face.

But while microneedling is generally considered safe for most people, it is not a procedure recommended for those who are dealing with active acne and are taking acne medication. It is also not advisable for women with certain skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema.

Is it painful?

Because microneedling involves the insertion of needles into the skin, moderate pain and discomfort are to be expected when undergoing the process. But generally speaking, it is not too painful as the needles only puncture within the dermis.

For those with low pain tolerance, some dermatologists apply a topical anesthetic to numb the target area prior to the pricking.

What to expect after?

Naturally, the skin will require some time to heal itself, but results are expected to be apparent after a couple of weeks. Depending on the severity of your acne scars, your doctor might prescribe multiple sessions in the span of months to really address the problem.

Do expect some minor irritation and redness right after the treatment. During this point, you will need to avoid applying makeup and exposing your skin to direct sunlight or pollutants. Doing so might trigger an infection that could worsen your skin condition. You may also want to skip using exfoliating products as the skin recovers.
