One of our ~guilty~ pleasures in life is examining pore strips after peeling them off our noses—there's just something oddly satisfying about seeing all the blackheads bunched up in one place. While this procedure may seem effective at getting the gunk out, some skincare aficionados argue that they are actually ineffective and can do more harm than good for your complexion. Read on to know more:
How do pore strips work?
In theory, pore strips work by acting as a magnet that pulls out all the dead skin cells, dirt, and oil from your pores. When you peel them away, you see all the gunk on the used strip. Despite the ~dramatic~ visual, there is actually *very little* deep cleansing that went on.
According to dermatologist Brian Zelickson, M.D.'s interview with Refinery29, "Pore strips work by removing the superficial part of the blackhead. While these pore strips may successfully remove portions of the blackheads instantly at the time of application, there is no evidence that the strips treat blackheads from recurring on a consistent basis."
Are pore strips effective in getting blackheads out?
Well, sort of. Pore strips do clean the surface of your nose by removing all the buildup, but these crevices will most likely be filled up again. Underlying major issues such as enlarged pores and overactive sweat glands are not addressed. If anything, pore strips are a quick fix, but if you really want more effective and long-lasting results, a visit to the dermatologist is your best bet.
What products can I use to clear blackheads?
Even though pore strips can temporarily clean the surface of your nose, clarifying and exfoliating products are still your best bet to deal with clogged pores. Here are top recos:
