The budol culture can get overwhelming. Every social media post you see is a product push by your favorite influencer. And if you go on TikTok, you get bombarded with messages like "This is the best product I've ever tried" or "OMG, I found my new holy grail."

For example, the budol culture is strong in the skincare community. And while we do appreciate the recommendations and reviews (we're also guilty of being excited to share beauty discoveries), there is a line that has to be drawn when too much is too much

This consumerism culture has birthed a new generation of content creators: Deinfluencers. They say if an item is overhyped or if you don't need it in your life. Some deinfluencers also discuss sustainability and consumerism culture. They also explain the environmental effects of shopping for every trending product you spot on social media.

Another form of deinfluencing is taking a step back to evaluate your current lifestyle and finding ways to make it more efficient. There is no need to shop for more items but to work with what you already own.

Below we bring our share to the deinfluencing conversation. We present to you these skincare habits you can add to your existing routine. Aside from the skincare products you're already using, these tips can help them work better and boost your skin's health.

These Skincare Habits That Can Give You Glowing Skin Don't Cost Money

  1. Wash your face for 60 seconds.

Taking time to cleanse your face can ensure that you'll get rid of the dirt and makeup on your skin. Facialists have been raving about the 60-second rule for years—did you notice that they take a while to wash your face during facials? Another tip from Dr. Vicki Belo: Sing two "Happy Birthday" songs to reach the recommended time frame for the cleanser to work on your skin.

  2. Clean your makeup brushes and sponges.

Your makeup tools touch your face so they must be regularly cleaned. Once a week, wash your makeup brushes and sponges with baby shampoo or facial cleanser. After every use, you may try a brush cleaner to get rid of the product buildup.

  3. Sanitize your phone.

Here's another thing that touches your face often. You can spritz the screen with the alcohol you already own and wipe it down with a tissue at the end of the day.

  4. Change your pillowcase and sheets once a week.

When you sleep or even come into contact with your beddings, your body leaves oil, sweat, and dead skin. This environment harbors bacteria growth that may trigger acne and other skin problems.

  5. Go easy on your sugar intake.

There is one 2010 study that claims that sugar intake affects the skin. According to their research, sugar molecules bond to proteins in the skin and this forms harmful compounds called Advanced Glycation End Products or AGEs. These compounds can damage the skin's collagen and elastin, and it can result in sagging and dull skin. A separate research called this effect, the Sugar Sag.

  6. Drink more water.

While there are not enough studies that connect water and skincare benefits, less water intake still physically manifests in the body. When you're dehydrated, it shows on your skin: flaking and dullness. Chug 11.5 cups of water a day if you want to reach the recommended water intake.

Instead, it introduces lifestyle habits you can follow to make your current products work better for you. There is also no substitute for consulting a dermatologist to learn what's best for your skin and health.)
