The rom-com (500) Days Of Summer is celebrating its 10th anniversary today, exactly “3,652 days” since the movie came out, according to Zooey Deschanel. The lead star of the movie posted a photo of the record store scene on Instagram.
Onscreen partner Joseph Gordon-Levitt also posted a throwback photo from the elevator scene. “Where did all the time go, @zooeydeschanel???”
In the movie, Zooey played Summer, a girl who doesn’t believe in love, while Joseph played Tom, a hopeless romantic. Following a nonlinear narrative, the movie jumped from one day to another and showed how their relationship began and ended.
The movie was a hit, but it also received criticisms. Some said it depicted Summer as a “manic pixie dream girl,” a term coined by film critic Nathan Rabin two years before the movie came out to describe a female character who “exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.”
Last year, Joseph addressed fans’ gripes about how Summer and Tom’s relationship ended. “Watch it again. It’s mostly Tom’s fault. He’s projecting. He’s not listening. He’s selfish. Luckily he grows by the end.”
(500) Days Of Summer has remained a crowd favorite through the years. Last year, Anne Curtis referenced the elevator scene where the characters talked about their love for music in a kilig post addressed to husband Erwan Heussaff. "Ahem @erwan. Remind you of 10 years ago? 'Friend' stage."
