The Philippine basketball community went into a frenzy over the weekend as professional basketball players Calvin Abueva, Mo Tautuaa, and their wives were caught in a shouting match—just minutes after their Game Two of the PBA 48th Season Commissioner's Cup on Sunday, February 4, 2024.
Several videos of Calvin and his wife, Salome, seemingly challenging Mo and his wife, Aida to face them made waves online. The video shows the Abuevas aggressively claiming that the latter had committed a "disrespectful" remark post-game, which triggered a sour reaction from Calvin.
"Tayong mga wife, hindi natin pwedeng bastusin 'yung asawa ng kahit na sinong player, 'di ba? Pwede, sa game lang. Pero 'pag dumaan 'yung player, you have to respect the player pa rin," Salome remarked in one of their viral videos.
Calvin Abueva's side of the story
Calvin was far from calm when reporters stationed along the hallways of the Mall of Asia Arena found him. It was just after a shouting match with a woman, reportedly Aida. He then faced the reporters fuming with rage.
"Tinanong niya ko kung nag-smile ba ako, sino ba 'yan para i-smile ko yan?” Abueva told the reporters. He added, "Sino 'yun? Nand'yan 'yung mga anak ko, nang-gaganon siya? Dumaan ako ng maaayos, dadaan ka sakin? Sino ka? Asawa ba ni Mo 'yun? Pare, ayan 'yung mga anak ko, gaganyanin niya ako."
In the video, Calvin claims he did nothing to have a rude encounter with Aida. The athlete argues that he was just waiting for his wife when Aida disrespectfully talked to him. "Dumaan siya dito, hinihintay ako anak ko, and then sabi niya "what the f*** are you smiling?" Sino siya para ii-smile ko siya," Calvin narrated.
"Bakit niya ako ginanun? Hinihintay ko asawa ko tapos gaganun niya ako," a distressed Calvin said.
Mo Tautuaa's wife airs her side
In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Aida aired her reaction to the Abuevas' explosive videos after their brief encounter.
Contrary to Calvin's story, Aida claimed that Calvin came after her while she was walking towards the bathroom. Walking past him, she allegedly saw Calvin smirk at her and nod in an insulting way before laughing in front of her.
She admits talking to Calvin after the alleged insulting smirk from him which she responded with, "What the f*** is wrong with you?" And that's when she presumably got surprised as Calvin aggressively went after her.
Moreover, on Instagram, Aida claims Calvin is "mentally unstable." "He is not mentally stable. When the PBA allowed him to play again, I was actually rooting for him and said that everyone deserves second chances. He clearly did not change," she wrote.
Calvin and his wife have been silent right after their videos went viral on Sunday. No official statement about the incident have been released from both Calvin and Mo's respective teams as well.
