The Long Plot, Sans Spoilers

Burn (Gerald Anderson) is having the worst luck in his life. He proposes to his girlfriend and gets rejected, THEN he loses his job. Burn can't take it anymore so he runs away and drives aimlessly until he finds himself in a run-down resort owned by Abi (Pia Wurtzbach). Abi is a ray of sunshine to brooding Burn and she is exactly what he needs.

This TV and movie actor, who also happens to be a triathlete, was last seen in the daytime teleserye Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin, his reunion project with former love team partner Kim Chiu.

The Miss Universe 2015 title holder was last seen in the MMFF blockbuster comedy Gandarrapido: The Revenger Squad with Vice Ganda and Daniel Padilla.

Did You Know?

1. This movie is sadly one of the last projects of director Cathy Garcia-Molina before she retires in August 2019. She will be doing only four more films before then—one with Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, another with Piolo Pascual, and two others with no final cast announced yet. Direk Cathy is retiring to focus on spending time with her young children.
2. Most of the scenes in this movie were shot in Coto Kidz Pool Mountain Resort located in Masinloc, Zambales. The crystal clear water and lush greens will make you want to plan a trip ASAP!
3. Gerald was required by Direk Cathy to wear an old, ripped towel with no brief or boxers underneath so you'll get a quick glimpse of his butt. You'll see a portion of the scene in the movie's second trailer below:
   
   
   
   
4. Pia Wurtzbach has always dreamt of playing the lead in a movie. She shares in an interview, "I've always wanted to be a beauty queen. Alam naman ng lahat na gusto ko siya, pero yung ini-aim ko noong mga panahon na 'yon… gusto ko talagang magkaroon ng lead role, magkaroon ng movie, ganyan. So I can say that before Miss Universe, this was my first dream." For those who don't know, Pia's showbiz career started in 2002 when she was launched as a member of ABS-CBN's Star Magic Batch 11.
   
   
   
   

What I Think:

I have to admit that when I first saw the trailer, I was not impressed and had no plans of watching the movie. But on the night of the film's premiere, I saw a lot of great comments about it and heard that it had a really surprising twist. So off I went to a nearby cinema to see what the fuss was all about.

The movie, for me, had good and not-so-good points.

Let's start with Director Cathy Garcia-Molina's usage of wigs. First, I have to say that I'm a big fan of this filmmaker. She's responsible for some of my favorite local movies: John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo's One More Chance and Miss You Like Crazy, John Lloyd and Sarah Geronimo's A Very Special Love and its two sequels, and most recently, one of the best Pinoy family dramas I've ever seen, Seven Sundays. That said, I also cannot, for the life of me, understand why she has to use hideous wigs! To be fair, I read that the reason she makes a character wear a wig is that some celebrities have limitations about what they can do with their hair because of product endorsements, so when a character is supposed to have short hair and the actress is not allowed to chop it off, she needs to wear a wig. But hello, are there no better-looking wigs in this country?! Gerald's hair honestly looked like a dirty mop!

Wig rant over, let's move on to Pia and Gerald's chemistry. Did they have the magic? I mean, they're obviously both beautiful people and the idea to put them together in a movie does seem like a good idea. But for me, they looked a little bit like brother and sister. No kilig feels for me, unfortunately.

Acting-wise though, I have no complaints. Gerald played the anguished Burn quite brilliantly. I was very impressed with the dramatic scenes, especially the ones after the big ~plot twist~ is revealed. (More on that later on!)

Pia was also surprisingly good! I wasn't expecting much from her, this being her first time to play the lead in a rom-com. But she wasn't bad at all! She fit the role of Abi perfectly. Her portrayal was endearing and I think she has the potential to get even better.

Since this is an honest review, I also have to note that some lighter scenes that were meant to be funny didn't really work. Gerald might need a genuinely funny girl like Arci Munoz if he's going to do any more comedies.

Now, about THAT twist, I won't spoil the surprise for you, but I will tell you that the movie eventually takes a serious turn. I applaud the filmmakers for bravely tackling this issue that people should be more aware of.

Another bright spot is one of the non-major characters, Ellaine, played by Dimples Romana. I swear this girl is so good, she never fails to make me cry! Watch for a particularly touching scene towards the end of the movie and bring some tissue if you cry easily!

"The movie, for me, was 60 percent romcom and 40 percent surprise! Gerald is brilliant as ever, and Pia is surprisingly great. She stood out in one particularly touching scene. The movie also has lessons that are very timely and applicable in this day and age." —Jimpy

Anyone who's just having tough luck in life. If you're struggling, I hope this movie makes you realize that you're not alone and to get help if you need it.
