The Hallyu wave is dominating the world and we can clearly see it: From sold-out K-pop concerts, Korean food trends, K-beauty products flying off shelves, and K-dramas topping Netflix charts, it's safe to say that the Korean culture phenomenon is here for a long time.
With the rise of Hallyu, South Korean entertainment companies are partnering with international production houses to bring more content abroad specifically to the US. This includes adaptations of hit series (the first one was The Good Doctor) that we *might* be able to watch anytime soon.
Here are six K-dramas that are reportedly getting a Hollywood remake:
1. Crash Landing On You
The OG cast: Hyun Bin, Son Ye Jin, Kim Jung Hyun, Seo Ji Hye
What we know so far: Following the popularity of Crash Landing On You which reached an all-time high, reports stated that an American adaptation is already in its final stages of planning and development with Netflix US. However, K-drama fans are not happy with this announcement and have been asking: "Where exactly will the crash landing happen?".
2. W: Two Worlds
The OG cast: Lee Jong Suk, Han Hyo Joo
What we know so far: Craig Plestis, a.k.a the producer who brought Korean TV shows (like The Masked Singer and I Can See Your Voice) to America, has relayed that the fantasy drama W: Two Worlds will be reproduced. It's going to be a collaboration between MBC America, his production company Smart Dog Media, and CBS Studios.
3. Extraordinary Attorney Woo
The OG cast: Park Eun Bin, Kang Tae Oh, Kang Ki Young, Joo Hyun Young
What we know so far: Just in—with only five episodes released, the healing drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo is already in talks for an American spinoff. JTBC News has reported that proposals are pouring after the series received high viewership ratings and positive reviews. As of writing, production company ASTORY is reviewing the offers.
4. Hotel Del Luna
The OG cast: IU, Yeo Jin Goo, Lee Do Hyun
What we know so far: In 2020, it was confirmed by Korean label Studio Dragon that Hotel Del Luna will be recreated under the American production company Skydance Media. This is their first collaborative project (which will be penned by Alias writer Alison Schapker, btw) and both companies are looking forward to the remake's success as they aim for content "that more people around the world can enjoy."
5 and 6. Vincenzo and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha
The OG cast: Song Joong Ki, Jeon Yeo Bin, Ok Taecyeon; Kim Seon Ho, Shin Min Ah
What we know so far: Vincenzo and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha—two hit K-dramas that were also produced by Studio Dragon—are offered rights for an international remake. This is currently being discussed and a source from the production company further explained: "The popularity of Vincenzo and the healing romance Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, which have a complex genre character, prove that global audiences have already fallen in love with K-dramas regardless of genre."
