Last week Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson – who share a four-year-old daughter called True – surprised fans when they revealed they are expecting a second child.
Confirming the news, the on-again-off-again couple said in a joint statement: "We can confirm True will have a sibling who was conceived in November. Khloé is incredibly grateful to the extraordinary surrogate for such a beautiful blessing. We’d like to ask for kindness and privacy so that Khloé can focus on her family."
Speaking to Heat Magazine about the 38-year-old's decision to use a surrogate to welcome her second child, a source close to Khloé claimed: "There were medical reasons that factored into her decision to use a surrogate, but not putting such a strain on her body was a huge motivation."
The insider continued, "[Kim and Khloé] made a pact at the start of the year that they'd go all out to get into the best possible shape and they've thrown themselves into the project."
But some fans think there's a deeper reasoning behind the decision, given that Khloé has always been open about giving daughter True a sibling. "True’s getting older, and I feel like it’s now time to have another kid," Khloé told Tristan in an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians last year.
"I actually get Khloé having another baby via surgery [sic] with Tristan. She wanted True to have a sibling that was fully related and relatable to her. Surrogate just means no mess," one fan tweeted, with another adding: "Am I the only one who understands why Khloé is having another baby with Tristan? It's via surrogate and they're not romantically involved."
Previously, Khloé revealed details of her surrogacy journey on KUWTK, admitting that she had underestimated how difficult the surrogacy process would be. "I did have one [a surrogate] and then it fell through," she told Andy Cohen on the reunion episode of KUTWK. "There are so many tests they have to do and all these things," she added, "I thought it would be a much easier process. And it’s not."
Khloé went on: "It’s a very tedious, hard process. And it was interesting because Kim went through the journey, and I swear it felt like she said, 'I want to get pregnant,' and two weeks later she found a surrogate."
News that Khloé is expecting a second child with Tristan comes just months after he confirmed he had fathered a third child with personal trainer Maralee Nichols – at the time, he and Khloé were dating. He later apologised for causing "heartache and humiliation".
