Keen observers of the moviegoing scene will know that Philippine cinema has been back for already quite some time now. The month of August looks to be a particular buzzy month for film lovers in the Philippines and to add to this checklist of "what to watch in the cinemas," the Korean Film Festival in Metro Manila will also kick off in the middle of the month and will allow moviegoers to catch acclaimed Korean films... for free! No strings attached—you just have to be one of the first people to show up, so of course, we got the schedule laid out below.
Here's how to watch movies for free at the Korean Film Festival 2022:
After an opening ceremony on Wednesday, August 10, the Korean Film Festival screening period will take place from Thursday, August 11 until Sunday, August 14 at selected cinemas in SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM City Grand Central, SM City North EDSA, and SM Southmall. The screening schedules and respective venues are listed below.
To watch the films for free, you simply need to line up outside the specified cinema and make it before the cutoff. It is possible to try and watch multiple films in the line-up in one day, but you'll need to exit the cinema after each viewing and fall at the back of the line once again to catch the next film.
The Korean films part of the festival include the coming-of-age drama Snowball, the hitman thriller Deliver Us From Evil, the historical action film Escape From Mogadishu, and the romance Miracle: Letters To The President starring Girls' Generation's Yoona.
Additionally, for the more dedicated and inquisitive fans who are curious about the Korean filmmaking scene, you'll be able to catch Snowball director Lee Woo Jung and Deliver Us From Evil director Hong Won Chan at a talkback after the opening ceremony screening of Deliver Us From Evil in SM Aura at 5 p.m. on August 10.
To take part in the opening ceremony screening, you'll need to pre-register online, in a link that will drop on the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines' Facebook page at 5 p.m. on August 8. The screening will still be free, but it is the only screening in the line-up that will require a pre-registry.
