We all need a Lea Salonga in our lives. The seasoned theater actress is inspiring families as she proudly shares her story as a mother to her transgender son, Nic Chien.

We all grew up with Lea reprising timeless roles on Broadway such as Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, and more. This year, Lea is coming back onstage as The Witch in the Theatre Group Asia's staging of Into The Woods.

Into The Woods will be a very special musical for Lea, as it marks the first time she'll be sharing the stage with her son. Nic, her only child with entrepreneur Rob Chien, will be playing Jack in the production.

This April, Lea and Nic’s journey as a mother-and-son duo navigating transition is highlighted in an upcoming issue of People magazine. In their interview, they open up about the highs and lows of embracing Nic's life as a trans man.

Nic is now 18 years old, in the prime of his teenage years, with a musical career ahead of him—almost like his mom. It was four years ago when he started confronting his thoughts and emotions about his gender identity. "I am still figuring it out. It took a while. A lot of crying!" Nic shared in their interview with People magazine.

Nic shared how open and accepting his parents have been, especially throughout the entire process. This January, he began taking testosterone—a significant milestone in his journey. Through it all, he remains deeply grateful for his parents, especially his mom, who has been his guiding force in both life and career. "I tell my mommy almost everything. She just didn’t want my life to be as hard as it could be," he told People.

Lea echoed Nic’s sentiments, expressing that acceptance was never difficult for her. Her priority has always been making sure her child feels safe and strong. "The one thing I've learned is that you have to raise your child the way your child needs to be raised... I want my child to feel safe and strong and ready to conquer the world on their own terms," Lea said.

According to People, Nic is steadily finding his way. He just graduated from high school and is now auditioning for male roles in musicals, and most importantly, following the footsteps of his mom—at his own pace.
