Liza Soberano admitted that she has turned down roles in the U.S. despite her desire to make a name for herself in Hollywood. But it's not just because she didn't like the roles.
In her exclusive chat with Preview.ph, Liza divulged that there were a lot of acting offers for her in the U.S. However, the roles had a stereotypical Filipino narrative—and that's something that she wants to break as an actress.
"After doing my press runs where I talked about being a Filipina actress, I constantly got offers for Filipino characters with very stereotypical arcs," Liza shared. Thankfully, she followed the advice of her U.S. team, who encouraged her to stay patient and let the right project come her way.
She further said that her goal in Hollywood isn't just to be an excellent actress, but it's also about still owning her Filipino heritage and going beyond stereotypes while making a name of her own. "I don't want to be limited or categorized based on my race. I want to one day be in the same conversations as other well-known actresses who star in projects that are up for Emmy and Oscar nominations," the strong-willed 26-year-old actress told Preview.ph.
Turning down roles despite the tough competition in Hollywood wasn't something that affected Liza if it meant setting that one solid path to becoming the kind of actress she wanted to become. She also acknowledged the fact that rejections will come her way, but she has, in a way, built an emotional immunity to it. "I don't really think about rejection. I've been in this industry long enough to understand how things work," Liza stated in her interview with Preview.ph.

Despite her huge following on Instagram and thousands of loyal fans back in the Philippines, Liza knows for a fact that her bout in the U.S. is far different from her career in the Philippines, and she's taking on that challenge no matter what. "In L.A., the market is so much bigger, so everyone has to fend for themselves. It can be a lot of work managing all of that, but it's honestly very liberating knowing that I'm capable of all of it," Liza declared.
Liza's words exude her growth not just as an actress, but more importantly as an individual. She's taking her time learning things and trying hard not to get overwhelmed with the pressure. After all, there's no formula to success. For Liza, what's important is to not lose the grit and the grace in achieving her dreams, one step at a time.
"Nobody actually knows what they’re doing...We can try our best to figure out the formula, to follow patterns, be a nice person, be the most talented person, and be surrounded by the best of the best, but there's no guarantee that that will translate to other people loving and appreciating your art. And that's just the reality of the entertainment industry," Liza said.
