Miley Cyrus is BACK. And better than ever, it seems, because after several long months of awaiting new music, we have finally been blessed with the masterpiece that is her new single, "Midnight Sky". To quote Lady Gaga, the song is "brilliant, incredible, amazing, show-stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it" kind of good. So yes, "Midnight Sky" was worth the wait!
But after giving the song a listen (or a million listens, can't keep track), it's pretty obvious that Miley is singing about her divorce from ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. I mean, how else can you read lyrics like "lotta years went by with my hands tied up in your ropes," or "I don't need to be loved by you"? Since it is a lil easy to get lost in the sauce though, please allow me to break the song down in detail.

[Intro]
La, la, la-la, la
[Verse 1]
Yeah, it's been a long night and the mirror's telling me to?go?home
But it's been a long time since I felt this good on my own (Uh)
Lotta years went by with my hands tied up in your ropes (Your ropes)
Forever and ever, no more (No more)
Liam reference numero uno. Taking a look into Miley and Liam's relationship timeline, you'll see they basically spent an entire decade making up, breaking up, and getting back together, which in Hollywood time is definitely "forever and ever." But now that they've gone their separate ways, Miley feels freer than she's ever felt. Good for her!
[Pre-Chorus]
The midnight sky is the road I'm takin'
Head high up in the clouds (Oh, oh)
[Chorus]
I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no
I don't need to be loved by you (By you)
Fire in my lungs, can't bite the devil on my tongue, oh no
I don't need to be loved by you
See my lips on her mouth, everybody's talkin' now, baby
Ooh, you know it's true (Yeah, yeah)
That I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no
I don't need to be loved by you (Loved by you)
Here, Miley's saying she cannot be tamed (interesting how that theme comes back around) now that she's a single lady again. And yes, Miley is fully referencing her whirlwind relationship with Brody Jenner's ex, Kaitlynn Carter and the time they made headlines after they were spotted kissing on a boat during an Italian vacation. Dunno if you remember, but it was a very hot topic, especially since Miley and Kaitlynn's kiss happened the same day Miley and Liam's split was announced.
[Post-Chorus]
La, la, la-la, la
[Verse 2]
She got her hair pulled back 'cause the sweat's drippin' off of her face (Her face)
Said, "It ain't so bad if I wanna make a couple mistakes"
You should know right now that I never stay put in one place
Forever and ever, no more (No more)
Yep, this checks out—Miley and Kaitlynn's relationship lasted approximately one month (and change) before Miley moved on with her most recent boyfriend, Cody Simpson...who she quite literally *just* broke up with. When Miley and Cody started dating, a little birdie shared that Liam didn't give a single f*ck about Miley's relationship endeavors because he's moved on, according to E! News.
Ooh, you know it's true (Yeah)
That I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no
I don't need to be loved by you (By you)
[Bridge]
Oh
I don't hide blurry eyes like you
Like you
[Chorus]
I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no
I don't need to be loved by you (By you)
Fire in my lungs, can't bite the devil on my tongue, you know
I don't need to be loved by you
See his hands 'round my waist, thought you'd never be replaced, baby
Ooh, you know it's true (Yeah)
That I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no
I don't need to be loved by you (Yeah)
[Outro]
La, la, la-la, la
La, la
You know it's true, you know it's true
Loved by you

If you want an explanation of what this song is about straight from the source, here's what Miley said about "Midnight Sky" during an interview on the Zach Sang Show:
"This song is really just a reflection of everyone kind of having this personal kind of woke moment, I feel like a lot of us are waking up. And you know, the midnight sky, I think is kind of a road that feels like it could be nice to take with our head up in the clouds. You know, I feel like right now in society, we don't want to live with our heads in the clouds. But I think in time that's maybe why I've created worlds like this. Because this is kind of my idea of living with my head in the clouds of my own kind of fantasy and the world I wanna create. So I think that it's a cool message, to tell people to create the environment and the world that you wanna live in and I think that's happening on a very political level right now. But also we can do it especially in this quarantine time, in these intimate spaces of our home that we have a place that feels like we've created our own environment, our own head in the clouds, so this is mine."
Now please excuse me while I listen to the best songs from Miley's discography for the rest of the day, thank you.
