For decades, the Miss Universe pageant has faced criticism for its exclusive nature. Critics have long pointed out how the competition's traditional format created barriers for many countries, particularly those from underrepresented regions, to reach the most coveted semifinal rounds. The selection process, typically controlled by a small panel of judges, left little room for diverse perspectives and global representation.

But it's not just the culture of empowerment that has evolved; the Miss Universe pageant itself is transforming. In a move toward inclusivity, Miss Universe 2024 will be embracing changes that aim to redefine the competition's landscape, making it more representative and progressive than ever before.

All Of The New Miss Universe 2024 Rules You Need To Know

1. Largest Contestant Pool Ever

In previous years, Miss Universe typically hosted between 80 to 90 contestants, with the 2023 edition featuring 84 delegates. The 2024 edition breaks this record with 130 countries and territories participating in the competition. This increase shows the organization's commitment to global inclusion and representation, making it the most diverse competition in the pageant's 73-year history.

2. Continental Queens System

From 130, Top 30 first cut will be chosen, four of which will be Continental Queens. Previously, semifinalists were chosen solely based on preliminary competition scores, often leading to disproportionate representation from certain regions. The new system guarantees semifinal spots for representatives from four different regions: Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and Asia and Oceania.

3. Fan Vote

Traditionally, the selection of semifinalists was entirely in the hands of the preliminary judges. The 2024 edition breaks this by reserving one semifinal spot for a contestant chosen through public voting. Fans will have direct influence over who advances in the competition, transforming the traditionally judge-centric selection process into a more democratic experience.

While the previous format relied solely on judges' scores for selecting all semifinalists, the new system balances tradition with inclusion. Twenty-five semifinal spots will still be awarded based on preliminary competition performance, while accommodating the new Continental Queens system and fan vote.

4. New Competition Flow

The former format typically advanced 20 semifinalists, then cut to 10, followed by a Top 5 and Top 3. The 2024 edition expands opportunities with 30 semifinalists competing in swimsuit, 12 advancing to evening gown (instead of the previous 10), and concluding with a Top 5 for Q&A.

5. Enhanced Production

While Miss Universe has always delivered spectacular productions, the 2024 edition raises the bar significantly. The Arena CDMX in Mexico City will feature the largest stage in the pageant's history. A new crown—the Filipino-made "Light Of Infinity"—will be awarded to Miss Universe 2024, replacing the "Force for Good" crown introduced in 2022.
