The highly-anticipated Shonda Rhimes drama Inventing Anna has just dropped on Netflix, and it's already causing *quite* the stir. The series follows the story of Anna Delvey, (real name Anna Sorokin) who posed as a German heiress between the years of 2013 and 2017 and conned friends, businesses and the New York downtown elite out of large amounts of money.
But as the critics' reviews rolled in thick and fast, it seems that viewers, and especially Twitter, were on the other side of the fence. While the critical reception was a solid C+, fans are loving the show. The divide is colossal, to say the least.
In complete contrast to these critiques, Twitter has seen a flood of messages from viewers who have gone on to praise the series. One user singled out and celebrated Laverne Cox's performance, writing: "I luv the versatility of #LaverneCox So many different roles and she changed with each, attitude, hair, posture, personality #InventingAnna," while another simply said: "#InventingAnna is getting me hooked!!!"
Further comments about from fans loving the show referenced Julia Garner (who plays Anna in the series) and her Emmy-winning Ozark character; "DON’T TXT ME UNTIL I FINISH #INVENTINGANNA", while another said: "Am I supposed to enjoy it this much? For crying out loud she's a scam artist. But why can't I stop loving her.. Damn.. #InventingAnna"
The 10-episode limited series was created by Shonda Rhimes, the woman behind Grey's Anatomy and Bridgerton, and one fan of the show was quick to praise her efforts, too. The Twitter user wrote: "@shondarhimes has done it again! I love @InventingAnna which premieres on #Netflix today. #InventingAnna! #netflixandchill"
Currently, the show has a modest score of 65% on Rotten Tomatoes, and while there are some critic reviews that have sided with viewers, it seems like the drama coming out of this drama is getting, well... dramatic.
