Russia, not unlike the Philippines, has had a long-standing problem with pollution, so much so that the Daldykan River recently turned blood red—and the government is scrambling. Seriously, it looks like every environmentalist’s nightmare.
People are pointing fingers at an industrial powerhouse in the city of Norilsk, which also happens to be one of the most polluted cities in Russia. The world’s largest heavy smelting industry is in Norilsk, and it “releases four million tons of [minerals and metals] into the atmosphere annually.” In fact, 25 per cent of the people living in the city work at Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant.
Unfortunately, scientists believe that the waste run off from Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant is the cause of the river’s change in color.
