The 1975 vocalist Matt Healy has spoken out against artists and music labels charging fans for meet-and-greet sessions. He tweeted, “Meet your fans or don’t. Don’t only meet them if you’re getting paid. Honestly, what are you doing?”
When someone commented that paid meet-and-greets are a way for newbie artists to bring in some extra cash, Matt called it a “paradoxical excuse for making music exclusive.”
Matt noted that the practice has become an industry standard around the world because “major labels have normalized it.” If fans were to pay in cash directly to the artists, he believes that the practice would soon stop.
Band manager Jamie Oborne tweeted in July 2018 that meet-and-greet sessions with The 1975 will “have no charge associated with it.”
