Red Velvet's Joy is out there standing up for herself. The K-pop idol made waves online for her direct response to people giving out unsolicited remarks about other people's appearance and weight.
In the Lunar New Year episode of the South Korean program, Animal Farm, Joy appeared as a special guest MC. During one of its segments, Koreaboo reported that the hosts tackled the concept of family gatherings usually done over the holidays.
Joy had a list of all the things that certain family members would be talking and complaining about during family gatherings. On her list was the topic of weight. She noted that the list she provided was something she was sure everyone would understand and relate to.
"I am sure you all will be able to relate to this: 'Oh you're pretty now but you would be even prettier if you lost weight,'" Joy said during the show.
While it may be part of the program's script, Joy was very much open about the topic and even remarked, "I’ll lose weight on my own," while looking straight into the camera.
Netizens showed their support for Joy after the episode aired and was shared on social media.

In December 2023, Joy went viral as some netizens commented about her weight gain, describing it as "too much." Red Velvet, together with SHINee's Key, performed at a brand event in Indonesia last December 14, 2023.
It was there when fans saw Joy almost for the first time, following her brief hiatus from activities. Joy went on an indefinite break that began in April 2023 due to health-related issues. Back then, she was not able to join some of their shows for their R to V World Tour, including their Manila stop.
