The Best Dairy-Free Chocolate Ice Cream Brands I've Ever Tried

Hello, my fellow lactose-intolerant folks.

I believe I'm still in my denial that I'm lactose intolerant. Even though I was born with the condition, I still find myself eating a grilled cheese sandwich, a plateful of cacio e pepe, and a TUB of ice cream. Lactaid is there to save the day anyway.

But after a heart-to-heart talk with my doctor, I'm now starting to think that maybe... just maybe... I need to grow up and prioritize dairy-free choices over those with milky goodness.

With a mission in mind to find vegan ice cream that tastes great and not some weird frozen scoop, I went on to find the best one in the market. I specifically chose chocolate because this flavor is well-loved by many so I assume plenty would benefit from this ~*review*~.

Ahead, in no particular order, is a list of the best-tasting chocolate dairy-free ice cream brands.

Dairy-Free Chocolate Ice Cream Brands Worth Trying

Alt Scoops Chocolate Hazelnut

I first encountered this brand during lockdown season, and it became one of my comfort foods. I also convinced my friends who were slowly transitioning to a plant-based diet to try this brand. Alt Scoops uses oat milk which lends a creamy texture to this dairy-free ice cream.

Choco Hazelnut reminds me of a Nutella latte. Its chocolate flavor isn't intense but the hazelnut notes are ~*there*~. It's a guilt-free dessert for me because it's light on the tummy yet it hits the sugar cravings. You can also get Dark Chocolate if you're craving a strong cacao flavor.

Kurimu Nama Chocolate Ice Cream

A random trip to Mitsukoshi Mall led me to try Kurimu's Nama Chocolate Ice Cream as a sweet ending to my ~eventful~ night. I was surprised to learn that this particular flavor is plant-based. Its creamy base is also oat milk, aka my "mylk" of choice.

What makes this different from other chocolate ice cream brands is that it's infused with Yardstick Coffee’s Switch Blend. It provides another layer to the cocoa flavor.

Auro Café Dark Chocolate Soft Serve

When Auro Café opened, it was almost impossible to get a spot, and the Dark Chocolate Soft Serve was always sold out. I finally got my chance a few weekends ago, and I'm just mind-blown by its flavor.
