You've probably heard of "Michelin Star" ratings, especially when dining at certain restaurants or high-end food chains. Now, you're about to see them more often in Filipino restos, as the long-awaited Michelin Guide has officially arrived in the Philippines and is set to rate the country's diverse culinary scene.

Michelin's anonymous inspectors will begin their gastronomic journey in Manila and Cebu, while also exploring Pampanga, Tagaytay, and Cavite. The decision to bring the guide to the Philippines stems from the country's "deep-rooted culinary traditions, combined with a strong openness to global influences, [which] create a uniquely diverse dining culture."

"In Manila, we see young, talented chefs redefining Filipino cuisine with fresh perspectives; while Cebu, as a leading tourist destination, offers an impressive range of dining experiences with world-class hospitality," Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide, said.

By the last quarter of 2025, the Michelin Guide will reveal the full list of recognized restaurants on its official website. So, stay tuned!

What is the Michelin Guide and how does it work?

ICYDK, the Michelin Guide is a globally recognized restaurant rating system with a mission to "guide international travelers and local food lovers to the best restaurants, highlight world culinary scenes, and promote travel culture."

Think of it like the stars you received and awarded in pre-school for a job well done:

  • One Michelin Star is awarded to restaurants with "high-quality cooking that is worth a stop."
  • Two Michelin Stars signify "excellent cooking that is worth a detour."
  • Three Michelin Stars are given to establishments offering "exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey."

According to its official website, restaurants are evaluated based on five universal criteria:

  1. The quality of ingredients
  2. The mastery of cooking techniques
  3. The harmony of flavors
  4. The personality of the cuisine
  5. Consistency—both over time and throughout the menu

If dining at a Michelin-rated restaurant feels out of reach, don't worry! Michelin also awards the Bib Gourmand distinction to restaurants that serve high-quality food at "moderate" (a.k.a. affordable) prices—proving that great dining experiences don't always have to break the bank.

The Michelin Guide will showcase Filipino cuisine.

When it comes to food, Filipino cuisine just never disappoints—and Filipinos know it. Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco welcomed the Michelin Guide's arrival, seeing it as an opportunity to showcase the country's rich culinary heritage.

"The arrival of the MICHELIN Guide is not only a testament to our country's culinary excellence but also a significant leap forward for Filipino tourism, with gastronomy now forming a key part of our national tourism priorities. In the Philippines, every dish tells a story, and every flavour is an invitation to experience our nation's rich cultural tapestry," she said.
