Feeling secure is a top priority, whether we're at home, at work, or simply commuting. It's comforting to know that this concern for safety is shared by the services we rely on. That’s why we’re excited about Grab's latest initiative—introducing its new audio recording feature and selfie verification!
Grab's New Safety Features: Selfie Verification and AudioProtect
Grab's Selfie Verification feature
You can now be confident that the driver picking you up is the same person whose information appears in the app, thanks to Grab’s Selfie Verification. This feature prompts drivers to take and upload verification selfies throughout the day, which Grab then uses to validate their identity.
Grab’s Selfie Verification feature reduces the risks of unauthorized drivers taking over someone else’s account or vehicle. Grab may ask for a real-time selfie to confirm that the driver matches the profile registered in the app. This helps make sure that only verified and approved drivers are operating, creating a safer environment for passengers.

Grab's AudioProtect feature
Once you start your ride, you can still feel safe all throughout the journey with Grab's AudioProtect. Powered by AI, this feature actively monitors audio signals to detect potential risks in real time. It complements other safety tools like trip monitoring and the "Share Your Ride" function, with audio recordings securely stored in the event of disputes or safety concerns.

How does Grab's AudioProtect feature work?
- Audio recording begins automatically once both you and the driver have enabled the AudioProtect feature in the app.
- Recordings will start when the ride begins and end when it’s completed. This feature is available for all Grab rides, excluding GrabShare.
- Audio files are stored on your device for up to 10 days and are deleted automatically unless a safety-related incident is reported.
- To protect privacy, recordings are digitally encrypted and cannot be accessed by you, the driver, or Grab.
- If a safety issue is reported, the relevant audio file will be uploaded to Grab’s system for review by authorized safety personnel, who will use the recording strictly for investigative purposes.
- Microphone permissions must be enabled for AudioProtect to capture the recordings.
According to EJ Dela Vega, the head of mobility at Grab Philippines, safety is the top priority in all of Grab's operations. He emphasized that ensuring a secure environment is a shared responsibility between the company, its drivers, and passengers.
"Our approach goes beyond the platform—we take an active approach in ensuring everyone has a safe ride," EJ stated.
"We have ongoing dialogues with our passengers, driver-partners, and government stakeholders, taking an active role in ensuring safe rides across the industry. Everyone plays a part in maintaining safety, and by working together, we can create a safer journey for all," he added.
As part of this commitment to safety, Grab has introduced the Safety-First Initiative, aimed at equipping drivers with proper training in safety management. This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with key government agencies and organizations, including the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW). Through this partnership, Grab aims to enhance their drivers' knowledge of safety protocols, ensuring a safer environment for both drivers and passengers.
