A digital nomad visa is a specialized visa designed to cater to individuals who wish to work remotely while residing in a foreign country. In the case of South Korea, this visa permits foreign residents to stay for an extended period, specifically up to two years, providing them the flexibility to continue their employment from abroad.
Prior to this announcement, options for foreigners seeking to combine work and leisure in South Korea previously involved applying for tourist visas or staying for less than 90 days without a visa.
How to Apply for Digital Nomad Visa in South Korea
To be eligible for the Korean digital nomad visa, applicants must adhere to specific criteria. They are required to submit documentation, including proof of an annual income exceeding 84.96 million Korean won (approximately $65,000 or P3.6 million), double the gross national income per capita in Korea. Additionally, applicants must furnish evidence of their employment status, details of their criminal record, and proof of private health insurance.
The eligibility criteria also include a minimum of one year of work experience in their respective field and a minimum age of 18. Under the new visa system, successful applicants have the option to bring their spouse and dependents under the age of 18 with them.
The introduction of the digital nomad visa will be in a trial period and the government plans to evaluate its effectiveness before deciding on its permanence. Foreigners interested in this opportunity are required to submit their applications to the Korean embassy in their home country.
