Sex museums around the world are aplenty, including the Icelandic Phallological Museum which is devoted entirely to penises, but the first-ever vagina museum in the world is just opening this year. The Vagina Museum will open on November 16 at Camden Market in London, UK, with pre-opening events from October 5 onwards.
According to their website, it started as a project in March 2017 with pop-ups around the UK. After a crowd-funding campaign that raised over £50,000 (about P3.2 million), they decided to open a brick and mortar establishment.
Their mission is to raise awareness of gynecological anatomy and health, give people confidence to talk about gynecological issues, and promote feminist, intersectional, and trans-inclusive values. They aim to challenge heteronormative and cisnormative behavior, and act as a forum for feminism, the LGBT+ community, and the intersex community.
“We have a vision of a world where no one is ashamed of their bodies, everyone has bodily autonomy, and all of humanity works together to build a society that is free and equal.”
Starting on October 5, pre-opening events will include expert talks and punny activities like “Pub(e) Quiz” and “Bajingo Bingo.” Their first exhibit, “Muff Busters: Vagina Myths and How to Fight Them,” will launch on November 16. Admission is free for all exhibits, while prices vary for the events.
