Warning: The heat you're experiencing now can get even hotter this Holy Week!

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) released its heat index forecast for the whole country—and many parts are well, in the red.

It means Metro Manila and 14 other areas in the Philippines are expected to experience very hot weather starting March 28, 2024, Maundy Thursday. The areas would be exposed to 42 to 51 degrees Celsius of heat, according to the state weather bureau.

As defined by PAGASA, the heat index is the "apparent temperature" felt by an individual as the air temperature combines with the surrounding humidity. If it falls under the "danger" category, it could most likely cause heat cramps and heat stroke if directly exposed to the sun.

The heat index, which ranges from 42 degrees Celsius to 51 degrees Celsius, is in the “danger” category. It could likely cause heat cramps and exhaustion, while heat stroke is probable with continued exposure to the sun.

The same goes for other areas in the country like Iba, Zambales, Olongapo City, and Dumangas, Iloilo. Meanwhile, Puerto Princesa City in Palawan might reach 45 degrees Celsius by tomorrow, according to PAGASA.

How to avoid heat stroke?

According to Dr. Emma Wedgeworth, a London-based consultant dermatologist, heat stroke is deadly. It can affect the functions of one's organ systems. "Your body's cells require a very specific temperature range to ensure that all the machinery works properly. If the body is subjected to either temperatures that are too hot or too cold, it can damage the way organs, such as your brain, work," explained Dr. Wedgeworth.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. listed down ways to avoid heat stroke, especially when the heat is so strong. Read below:

  • Drink plenty of water!
  • If possible, go to air-conditioned places to cool off (shopping malls and libraries)
  • NEVER leave kids or pets in a closed, parked vehicle
  • When going outside on a *really* sunny day, do NOT forget to bring the following:
    • A hat
    • Sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher)
    • Lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
    • Water

  • It is advisable that you limit your time outdoors when the heat index is rising!

Dr. Wedgeworth added, "True heat stroke is a medical emergency, so you need to seek medical attention as soon as possible. While doing that, move to a cool shady area, and remove unnecessary clothing. Use fans or sponges with cool water to encourage temperature reduction and stop any exercise immediately."

Drink your water, besties!
