Masks up, everybody! The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) released a volcanic smog alert over the western side of Taal Volcano, on the evening of September 21. This means that the air today in Tagaytay and parts of Metro Manila might have already been affected by the vog.

According to the state volcanology bureau, vog or volcanic smog consists of fine droplets containing volcanic gas such as sulfur dioxide, which is acidic and can cause irritation of the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract. Ultimately, vog usually makes the air appear foggy and dusty.

Here are some things to keep in mind to prevent possible danger from the vog, according to Phivolcs:

1. Limit your exposure. Avoid outdoor activities as much as possible, you guys. It's better to stay indoors. Keep your doors and windows properly shut to block out vog.

2. Protect yourself. Surgical masks are not enough against volcanic smog. Phivolcs suggests to use N95 facemask when going outdoors. Drinking lots of water may also help reduce any throat irritation or constriction. Most importantly, seek help from a medical practitioner if you experience any severe effects due to the vog.

On Friday, September 22, Phivolcs together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) clarified that the vog was not in any way related to Taal Volcano's activities.

Moreover, the detected vog was "drifting west-southwest" and not towards Metro Manila.

Stay safe!
