Time to settle the score, ladies and gents: do you think your partner needs to ask you to be their Valentine on Valentine's Day? Or should it be automatic? Since you're already together, shouldn't you be each other's dates on what's considered to be one of the most romantic holidays? Well, a trend on TikTok now seems to be making a case for significant others to ask their lovers to be their dates on Valentine's.

Even content creators are joining in on the convo, seemingly dropping hints to their beau as to why they haven't "asked" yet. CK De Leon and her boyfriend Mikee Reyes made the Internet LOL with this one. (You could really see the confusion and panic in Mikee's eyes, haha!)

Soooo... do you have to ask your partner to be your Valentine?

The question remains: should you or should you not have to ask your partner to be your Valentine? Well, the answer is simple: it's the little things that matter. An article from Cosmopolitan India (yes, this debate is so universal it applies to couples across barriers), says it has everything to do with appreciation and comfort with your partner and is a way to strengthen your relationship. Now, you don't really have to do it, especially if you consider it as a chore or an extra step you need to get over with.

What asking your partner does is—and speaking as a girlfriend myself—it makes the holiday even more special. Now yes, you may have already done your part by buying the flowers or planning the dinner, but taking the extra effort to ask beforehand is a small but meaningful romantic gesture. It'll be very much appreciated and remembered, trust me. It may not seem that deep—and in fact, it may even be seen as funny or trivial by some.

But isn't that the point? If explicitly saying you want to be someone's Valentine makes them feel good, then that should be reason enough. It's a way to show you value your bond, especially during this romantic day. And there's no single right way to do it—just ask however and whenever it feels right for you.

Yes, it may look a little silly, (especially to those who are a bit more mature), but kilig knows no age. At the same time, it's always these little things that make a relationship even sweeter. We're already stressed by our everyday routines, so taking the extra time to ensure your partner feels loved and seen by this simple gesture isn't that complicated.
