Most celebrity couples thrive in the spotlight, where glitz and glamour define their world. Their lives are an open book, with every moment shared and celebrated. That’s the expectation—one I held, too. But when we met Jennylyn Mercado and Dennis Trillo, it changed.
Well, it's also expected that whenever we meet celebrities up close, there's always a different and unique aspect about them that we discover. For Jennylyn and Dennis, it was about the love that they share. It's the quiet kind—serene but intense. It's not perfect, they say. There were rough patches and second chances before they get to their happy ending.
It wasn’t our first time meeting Jennylyn—she graced the cover of Cosmopolitan Philippines in May 2024 and so saying we were thrilled to see her again in 2025 would be an understatement. This time, she arrived with her husband, Dennis, making the moment even more special. Dressed casually, they walked into Cosmo HQ, greeting everyone as if they were just one of us—as if they weren't two of the most celebrated stars in the industry.
Jennylyn and Dennis started their showbiz career almost at the same time, through reality shows too. With Dennis joining Star Circle in 2001, and Jennylyn winning the very first season of Starstruck in 2003. And all the stars must have aligned because it was around that time when they first met.

Dennis saw Jennylyn even before the latter won Starstruck. "Meron 'yung presentation ng Starstruck 'dun sa Broadway Centrum. Nags-start pa lang din ako 'nun. Tapos first time kong makanood 'nung—sa Walang Tulugan yata 'yun. Siyempre, siya 'yung pinaka-stand out and siya 'yung pinakamaganda 'dun sa batch," he recalled, to which Jennylyn responded with, a playful comment, "Naku," as if not wanting to believe Dennis's comments, LOL.
For Jennylyn though, the first proper meet-up that happened between them was actually during her 18th birthday (yes, 18!) "Kasama siya sa dance, sa 18 roses," she affirmed as I sat back amazed at how long they've known each other. At the time, the two had their respective relationships, so their connection started as colleagues first.
The lovers have worked in a number of teleseryes in the past, but one show stands out as what we can call the most memorable one for the couple—Gumapang Ka Sa Lusak. It's not the first show where they worked together, but it was the show that made them closer.

But they actually didn't get to know each other by flirting. It was through their real-life responsibilities and situations back then that allowed them to gradually make sense of each other's personalities. "Mas mature na siya 'nun kasi, medyo marami na siyang pinagdaanan, nagkaroon na siya ng baby. 'Yun 'yung naging pinaka-bonding namin, paano maging mabuting parent sa anak, ako rin may baby rin [that time].'Dun kami talaga nagka-bonding," Dennis noted.
Their conversations in between work led to one of the many reels-to-real love stories that the nation followed. After all, they were at the peak of their careers. It didn't work out the way they wanted it to at first. A year after they publicly dated, they called it quits.
It was a bad breakup according to Jennylyn, one that assured her that there was no chance to ever be with Dennis again. And so years later, when all was said and done—she even deleted Dennis' phone number because who keeps their ex's number, anyway?—Jennylyn was in for the biggest plot twist of her life.

"'Nung narinig ko 'yung boses niya parang 'yung lahat ng dugo ko umakyat sa ulo ko. Anong nangyari?!" Jennylyn humorously illustrated as she revealed how Dennis reached out to her years after their awful split. Add to that the fact that they already had relationships (which also didn't work out for the both of them) after dating, it was quite unbelievable for Jennylyn.
All it took for their romance to start again was one text and a call from Dennis (plus a little bit of courage, for sure). Jennylyn narrated as she relived the memory. It was the year 2014 and Dennis sends Jennylyn a message. "Nag-message ka lang sabi, 'Hi!' Ganon lang. Tapos sabi ko, 'Who's this?' Tapos sabi, 'Ah, si Dennis,' tapos sabi ko, 'WEH?' (laughs) Tapos mamaya-maya tumawag na siya," she detailed before giggling.
The way Jennylyn told the story made us all laugh out loud, and it warmed our hearts because of how genuine it was to see her recalling that defining moment with her first love. "Grabe 'yung pakiramdam—kasi first love ko siya eh. So 'nung tumawag ulit siya ang tagal na naming walang communication... Hindi ko na inexpect, bad breakup eh," she told Cosmo.
It would be a sin not to ask Dennis why he called Jennylyn that day. So we did.

"Na-miss ko siya," Dennis straight up said with a smile.
He playfully (but truthfully) explained, "Na-realize ko na. Siyempre nakumpara ko din kung ano yung kung paano kami dati—'dun sa mga hindi nag-work na relationship. So sabi ko parang siya pa rin 'yung pinaka-ultimate ano talaga, ultimate survivor." And that's when the room filled with laughter—Jennylyn's being the loudest ;)
From that point forward, Dennis and Jennylyn led a life filled with love...and comedy. The two officially tied the knot in November 2021, and in April 2022, they welcomed their beautiful daughter, Dylan Jade.
Their married life—even as celebrities—is just the same as every other couple. It's sometimes chaotic, most of the time funny, but always in love. One of the biggest challenges that they had along the way was to navigate through their own modern family set-up. It's not a secret that Dennis and Jennylyn are also parents to their eldest sons from their respective former relationships, Calix and Jazz, who are now teenagers.
"'Yung pagkakaroon ng modern family na set-up. 'Yung una, adjustment—nahihirapan mag-adjust. Pero hindi naman pala ganoon ka-hirap, dahil once na-accept niyo na 'yung isa't isa, magfo-follow na lahat 'yon, and mas magiging organic na," Dennis shared.
From what we've seen and heard from Dennis and Jennylyn: it all boils down to that commitment to choose their partners every day. "Wag susukuan ang isa't isa," said Dennis.

Jennylyn is wearing red coords from Mango, and Dennis wearing a sweater from H&M.
Jennylyn tells Cosmo that they don't do big fights as a couple, mostly it's all about the "petty things," she says. Like when Dennis won't listen to her about preparing for a trip, or not closing the door to their room, and more. "'Di ba sabi ko sa'yo mag-impake ka na?!" Mga ganon lang," she even reenacted.
Despite them having those kinds of simple fights only, Dennis shared that it's important for him to keep track of Jennylyn's menstrual cycle—for mood-tracking, apparently. "Inaalam ko 'yung routine niya, inaalam ko kailan dumating 'yung period—kailan nagiging sensitive. Napaka-importante na malaman 'yun ng mga mag-partners dahil minsan hindi mo naiintindihan na ganito pala yung pinagdadaan niya sa ganitong itong araw ng buwan. 'Yun na pala 'yung araw na kailangan mo mas maging maingat, mas maging malambing," he says when we asked him about his lambing move when his wife gets annoyed.
And that's actually one of the many things why Jennylyn fell in love with Dennis. It's his constant effort to make her feel loved, even in the tiniest details of her life.

If Dennis and Jennylyn's love story were a movie, then they've kept the momentum going. After all, there are a lot more things that the couple are eyeing to do together. But they're scratching one item off their bucket list: starring in a new movie as a married couple, Everything About My Wife.
Dennis and Jennylyn gave their sweet 'yes' to the story because they deeply related to the love it portrayed. More importantly, they saw it as an opportunity to share meaningful lessons—both as individuals and as a couple. To them, it felt real.
Jennylyn actually confessed that she was kind of the clingy wife. "Merong mga moments sa movie na naka-relate kami, like 'yung kahit saan kami nandito, kahit na nagnu-number two, pumasok sa CR, kinakausap ko pa rin. 'Yung parang wala nang space, kahit saan sinusundan ko siya. Parang, "nasaan ka?" Kasi ganon kami sa bahay, "Papa nasaan ka?" 'Yung gusto ko lang nandyan lang siya sa tabi ko," she said.
It wasn't an embarrassing confession—if anything, it was too cute to know Jennylyn's clingy side. Dennis on the other hand tried to think about a scene in the movie that felt too real for him. As Jennylyn waits for his answer, he says in defeat, "Wala pala," LOL!

In the movie, they starred alongside Sam Milby. The story revolves around Dom (Dennis) who asks his neighbor Miguel (Sam) to purposefully steal his wife, Imo (Jennylyn). Dom realizes he wants an out from his marriage with Imo, and so he aims to make Imo cheat on him. That is, until Miguel really falls for Imo.
There's a bit of a love triangle in the story, and obviously, Sam will be Dennis' rival in the film. Offscreen, Sam, Dennis, and Jennylyn share the same hobby of doing intense motorbike rides to places. Well, in fact, one of the most unforgettable moments that Dennis and Jennylyn had with Sam involved a motorbike.
"Hindi eksena, nangyari sa kanya," Dennis said as he began telling what happened to Sam. On the side, Jennylyn couldn't stop laughing gleefully. "First time niya dalhin 'yung motor—'yung motor kasi niya, parang alanganin 'yung position [parking], naka-incline," Dennis remarked. In between, Jennylyn was also commenting about the memory of seeing Sam's gorgeous motorbike.
"Tapos nabalitaan namin na nahulog siya sa motor. Hindi pa umaandar. Aalisin pa lang niya, na-out of balance. Tapos sabi namin, kahit gaano katagal ka nang nagmo-motor, nangyayari pa rin 'yun sayo," Dennis said, noting that Sam has been riding a motorcycle since he was nine years old.
Jennylyn's level of comfort with Sam—with whom she worked in The Prenup (2015)—feels just as natural as working with her husband, Dennis. That’s not to say there aren’t any bumps along the way. Creative disagreements happen, but they've handled them well.
And their number one rule when working together? Never bring their personal problems to work. "Pinaka-basic na rule na huwag mag-aaway sa set. Huwag maaapektuhan 'yung trabaho ng mga personal na issues," and so far, there's not a single moment that they let their problems come between their work, Jennylyn disclosed.
Dennis and Jennylyn don't need a script to navigate their relationship—it's real love, and they're enjoying every moment. As we laughed through that afternoon chat, they shared their future plans, always supporting each other—because their story has no end in sight.

They're off to a packed year: Dennis just won "Best Actor" at the Metro Manila Film Festival 2024 for Green Bones, Jennylyn is set for several acting comebacks, they've launched their own production company, and Everything About My Wife is hitting the big screen. But thankfully, they've found a way to balance it all.
Aside from their usual movie marathons at home or unwinding at their resthouse, traveling with their kids remains a cherished pastime. But lately, one activity has taken their bonding to the next level: creating TikToks, which has become an absolute favorite for the couple.
"Hindi niya rin in-expect na magiging ganun ako," Dennis said referring to how quirky he is on TikTok. We couldn't help but keep on laughing while Dennis divulged the story behind their viral TikTok vids.
"In short, pagiging malala," Jennylyn funnily retorted.

And that's life for Dennis and Jennylyn—them thriving in their careers, going home to their kids, making memories with their family, doing TikToks together, and just choosing to love, no matter where they are in life.
"Ano mang pagsubok 'yung dumaan, kailangan walang susuko. Mag-asawa na, dapat lagi niyong iintindihin 'yung isa't isa, kahit gaano pa kahirap 'yung problema," Dennis concluded on what it takes to achieve their own version of happily ever after. Beside him, Jennylyn nodded and smiled, wholeheartedly agreeing, knowing that no matter the twists and turns, they're always each other's happy ending.
