If you’re a longtime follower of father-and-daughter duo Gabby and KC Concepcion, then you’re probably aware that their relationship hasn’t always been smooth sailing, especially after Gabby separated from the actress’ mom Sharon Cuneta and left for America. In a vlog, the two got candid about how they managed to rekindle their relationship after almost fifteen years.
“I always tell people you’re the first man I ever loved,” said KC in the heartfelt Q&A sesh with her dad. Despite it happening years back, the two still got the memory of the first time they talked again, like it was yesterday. It was winter when the reconciliation happened over the phone, narrated the former matinee idol. He said, “When you called that day, it was in the back of my head, one day hahanapin ako neto, I don’t know when. It happened, and I knew it was you.”
KC herself shared her own version of the story, which happened when she was waiting for a school bus. After the call, she got so emotional that she had to skip classes. “It was the first time we reconnected. It was such a big moment for me that I had to miss class. I remember I was crying on the bus when I put the phone down kasi natulala lang ako. I couldn’t believe na naririnig ko pa rin yung boses mo in my ears even after we put the phone down. I was crying alone sa bus stop.”
The two have certainly put the rocky patch behind them, and after their reconciliation, they’re now closer than ever. Gabby shares that he is one proud dad to KC, who managed to hold her own despite his years of absence in her life. “Your ability and your talent as a singer. You’re in the business. You get things done because you want [to]. These [are] things I didn’t teach you, you just learned on your own. As a parent, you want your children to be successful and you achieved that.”
He added, “I always want that in whatever you do, you’re happy. Whether it’s work, being with friends, in a relationship, basically whatever you do. I may not say it all the time but I’m always thinking about your well-being, your happiness.” Aww!
KC is also happy about how their story inspired others–particularly singer Moira Dela Torre, who was once estranged from her dad, too and was inspired to rekindle her own relationship with him. She shared, “Moira and I saw each other backstage of Araneta coliseum, talagang niyakap niya ‘ko, si Darla caught her. Moira has so many magazine articles in her room [detailing] the moment we met and told our story. Naka-relate si Moira, she was so touched sa story natin na if it could happen to us, it could happen to her.
“She re-established her connection with her dad. [Sabi niya], ‘You’ve been my big sister. You never knew. I would always follow that story of yours and your papa. That inspired me.’ So I’m really happy that we inspire people.”
