Whenever I see girls on a Facetime call while dining in a restaurant, I remember my time in Korea for six weeks. That was the longest time that my partner and I were apart. I believed that LDRs are not for the faint of heart.
Sorry—I just had to. It’s my most favorite time of the year! Anyway, back to my story: when I got back home from that internship trip, I knew that I couldn’t be away from my partner that long again. But I do have friends who are in long-distance relationships, and I always wonder how they weather all the challenges. One of those would probably be spending the holidays apart and not being able to travel, especially when the pandemic closed borders. I wonder if their plans have changed now that flights are more accessible again. So, I set out to find LDR couples to ask them about their plans this year. Here’s what some of them mentioned:
LDR Couples Share How They’re Spending The Holidays This 2022
Gifts and Virtual Dates
Reggie Nulud and Roxanne Latawan met online and have been together for more than two years.
Reggie: "My partner, Roxanne, is based in New Zealand and I am currently based in Manila. As an LDR couple, Roxanne and I usually celebrate holidays and special occasions through video calls. We also watch movies together via watch party on streaming platforms. We may be a thousand miles apart, but we ensure that we are up to date with each other's lives.

"We also give each other simple gifts during special occasions, such as Christmas, birthdays, and anniversaries. If not, just a food delivery from Grab Food or Uber Eats will do to satisfy our food cravings as if we were eating together. We will practically be celebrating the holidays as usual. However, we plan to travel together early next year."
Video Call Until Midnight
Unica Mae Bacamante and Moonjo Kim also met online and have been together for 70 months.
"During our past Holiday celebration, it’s very hard since 'di mapagtagpo ang schedule namin (we are both employed). Wala naman problema sa time difference. So, what we usually do is just have quality time thru video call while we are celebrating Christmas together with our own families. Same with New Year—we just wait together for midnight. We also exchange gifts.
"[For this holiday, we’re planning to] maybe just have quality time again thru video call since we are preparing for our meetup in January. I will celebrate Seollal (Korean New Year) with his fam."
Two Countdowns
Thalia and Jazy met through a dating app and have been together for four years.
“As an LDR couple, hirap kami mag-celebrate ng holidays like for Christmas or New Year [dahil sa] time difference. Ahead ng seven hours ang 'Pinas.
"We do a video call para mag-countdown. Same sa kanya, nag-pupuyat ako para makapag-countdown sa time nila. This year, we will celebrate holidays as usual."
Looks like many are still sticking to their virtual traditions this year but traveling with each other may be on the horizon in 2023. If you’re in an LDR, what are your plans this year? Share them with us via comments!
