While there not enough studies to show if the coronavirus can live on footwear, family practitioner Georgine Nanos suggests that this factor should still be considered. She says that if one went to a heavily populated location, say a grocery or a market, shoes can be "a potential source of contamination." If you ask us, it's better to be safe than sorry. Below, all the ways you can disinfect your footwear before you go inside your house.
Before you proceed on disinfecting your footwear, please make sure of the following:
- Wear gloves before cleaning
- Use a cleansing product that's approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
With disinfectant wipes
The quickest way to kill disease-causing germs on your footwear is by cleaning the shoes' surface with disinfectant wipes. But, you must test on one area of the shoe first if the product won't affect its color or texture.
With soap and rubbing alcohol
Give your footwear a thorough clean by washing it with soap and water. Use a brush on the sole to effectively dislodge stuck dirt, too. After rinsing, wipe it dry with a tissue and apply 70 percent isopropyl alcohol.
With bleach and water
For fabric shoes, you can wash the virus away with the help of bleach. Bleach is proven to be effective in eradicating germs on surfaces. Follow the instructions on the label for best results. Since bleach can fade color, opt for a color-safe formula for non-white footwear.
