Miss Universe Pakistan 2023 Erica Robin *stood out* during the swimsuit round of the prestigious pageant's preliminary competition, as she opted not to wear a bikini. Instead, the beauty queen confidently graced the stage wearing a burkini.
ICYDK, a burkini is a full-body swimsuit. It's a combination of the words "burka", a.k.a. a loose outer garment worn in public by some Muslim women, and "bikini".
According to NPR, "the goal of the burkini is to marry swimwear with Islamic views. Practicing Muslim women follow the Koran's call to 'cover and be modest' in a dress.'"
In an interview with The National, Erica shared that it was her "personal choice" to wear a burkini as she has an "immense respect" for her culture.
The 24-year-old model also made history as the first-ever representative from Pakistan.
"This is the first time after 71 years that Pakistan is being represented," she told Dyan Castillejo in an interview. "I want to tell the world that no matter where you come from no matter what your background is, I don't come from a rich family, but what I do have is a prupose in life. And the purpose is not just for me and myself. It's for others as well. So I believe if your goal in life is to be a better person and to see the change in the world, the whole universe will help you out to achieve it all."
The 72nd Miss Universe competiton will take place on Saturday, November 18 in El Salvador. Pinoy pageant fans can tune in through A2Z Channel 11, Kapamilya Channel, Metro Channel, and iWantTFC.
